HTTP 503: Handling site maintenance correctly for SEO

Sometimes, your site will need some downtime, so you can fix things or update plugins. Most of the time, this tends to be a relatively short period in which Google will most likely not attempt to crawl your website. However, in the case that you need more time to get things fixed, chances are much higher that GoogleBot might come for a visit and be confronted with a website that’s down. So how do we prevent Google from deranking your website?

Become a technical SEO expert with our Technical SEO 1 training! »

Technical SEO 1 training Info HTTP status codes and you

For those not familiar with HTTP status codes, here’s a brief summary of the ones that apply to you when dealing with site maintenance:

  • 200 OK. This status code dictates that the server was successful in returning a response.
  • 301 Moved permanently. This tells the browser that this page is no longer valid and will redirect to the correct page.
  • 302 / 307 Moved temporarily. There’s some history behind these two HTTP status codes, but what this dictates to the browser is that you’ll temporarily be redirecting the browser to a different page and that the current URL will eventually be back to its former state.
  • 404 Not Found. This status code means that the page you were trying to navigate to, couldn’t be found.
  • 410 Content Deleted. Use this if you deleted your content on purpose and there will be no replacement. Find out more about how to delete pages properly.
  • 503 Service unavailable. This is the one you want to be returning to Google when you’re dealing with site maintenance. It tells Google that you are in fact working on this page or that something else went wrong. Google knows that when this status code is returned, to check the page again later on. This is what we’ll be discussing a bit more.

Please note that Google will consider pages returning the 200 HTTP status code, despite there being an error (or very little content) on the page, as a “soft 404” in Google Search Console.

Telling Google you’re busy

If Google runs into a 404 while crawling your site, it’ll usually toss out that page from the search results until it comes back the next time to verify the page is back. However, if Google repeatedly runs into a 404 on that specific page, it’ll eventually postpone re-crawling which means that more time will pass before the page returns in the search results.

To overcome this potential longer loss of rankings, you need to return a 503 status code whenever working on a particular page. The original definition of the 503 status code, according to this RFC, is:

The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. If known, the length of the delay MAY be indicated in a Retry-After header. If no Retry-After is given, the client SHOULD handle the response as it would for a 500 response.

What this means is that returning a 503 in combination with a Retry-After header, which will tell Google how many minutes to wait before coming back. This does not mean Google will crawl again in exactly X minutes, but it’ll ensure Google doesn’t come back around to take a look anytime before then.

Yoast SEO: the #1 WordPress SEO plugin Info Adding the header

If you want to implement the header, there are a few options you can choose from.

Using the WordPress defaults

By default, WordPress already returns a 503 when updating plugins or WordPress core. WordPress allows you to override the default maintenance page by adding a maintenance.php to your wp-content/ directory. Please note that you’ll then be responsible for properly returning the 503 header. Plan on doing database maintenance? You’ll have to take care of that as well. Add a db-error.php file to your wp-content/ and make sure that you also properly return a 503 header here as well.

If you’re looking to add something fancier to your WordPress website, check out WP Maintenance Mode. This plugin also adds a lot of extra features, besides what we mentioned in the previous section.

If you’re just writing your own code and want a solution that’s easy to implement, you can add the following snippet to your codebase and call it in the code that determines if you’re in maintenance mode:

function set_503_header() {
    $protocol = 'HTTP/1.0';

    if ( $_SERVER['SERVER_PROTOCOL'] === 'HTTP/1.1' ) {
        $protocol = 'HTTP/1.1';
    }

    header( $protocol . '503 Service Unavailable', true, 503 );
    header( 'Retry-After: 3600' );
}

Note that the 3600 in the code snippet dictates the delay time in seconds. That means that the above sample will tell GoogleBot to return after an hour. It’s also possible to add a specific date and time in Retry-After, but you need to be careful with what you add here, as adding a faulty date might result in unexpected results.

Pro-tips Caching

There are a few things you need to take into consideration when working with maintenance pages and returning 503 status codes. If you actively use caching, you might run into a situation where the cache isn’t properly passing on the 503 status, so please make sure you test this properly, before actively using this on the live version of your website.

Robots.txt

Did you know it’s also possible to return a 503 status code for your robots.txt? Pierre Far from Google explains in this article that Google will halt crawling your website if you return a 503 status code on your robots.txt file. The biggest advantage to this is less server load during maintenance periods.

Handle your maintenance well!

As we have seen, you can avoid losing rankings by adding a 503 when you’re doing site maintenance, to let Google know it can come back to crawl your site later. There are several ways to do this. Pick what works best for you, and you’ll have a well-maintained site with no danger of losing rankings. Good luck!

The WordPress SEO Enhancements You Wish You Had, And Now Can — Part 3

The WordPress SEO Enhancements You Wish You Had, And Now Can — Part 3 was originally published on BruceClay.com, home of expert search engine optimization tips.

Announcing Bruce Clay SEO WP™ …

If you’re a WordPress publisher, you have many options for boosting your search engine optimization. You may be using Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, or another plugin to help you cover many SEO bases for the content you publish.

However, as I’ve been pointing out through this series of posts, current SEO plugins don’t go far enough. A lot of enhancements are needed to take you from just “best practices” to targeted and specific guidance that shows you how to get the maximum visibility for each of your posts.

In Part 1 and Part 2 of this series, I explained gaps that currently exist between SEO plugins available and the needs today. It’s a topic I’ve been thinking about for well over a year, as well as dreaming, planning and developing …

Now in this Part 3 post, I’m pleased to share a solution that has been months in the making.

The Bruce Clay SEO plugin for WordPress brings the power of our proprietary SEO diagnostic tools to the WordPress environment. And it adds search ranking and analytics performance metrics to the WordPress interface.

The combination of the new plugin and the SEOToolSet™ powering it is a MASSIVE difference-maker. We set out to “bridge the gaps” and enable any WordPress copywriter, editor or publisher to implement smarter SEO improvements, monitor their content’s reach, and much more.

Here’s what WordPress SEO has been missing until now.

Competitive Insights

Optimizing content based on SEO best practices is like trying to do surgery with a cookie cutter.

Smart SEO considers the variety of pages that Google is already ranking for any particular query. You can then improve a page that matches the query intent and content type to be the best result.

To make this easy for WordPress users, the new plugin presents customized guidance on how you should alter your content elements. Recommendations reflect what Google is rewarding in the search results per keyword. The Bruce Clay SEO WP plugin brings insights from analyzing the top-ranked competitors right into the publishing environment.

You can also see which of your posts are succeeding in the search results. Based on metrics from Google Search Console like pageviews from Google visitors, you’ll know your best performing content from an SEO perspective and be able to create more unicorns like it.

Until now, you haven’t been able to easily see what competitors are doing. And you don’t receive guidance adjusted per keyword for your content targets. That ends here.

Keyword and Content Insights

What’s the optimal reading level for your content? It depends. Each keyword query can have its own set of signals when it comes to the search engine algorithms and what searchers expect. So readability scores naturally vary based on the query.

Smart readability goals should assess the reading level of your page or post compared to the top-ranking pages for the targeted keyword. This lets the author instantly know if the new content is on par with the competition at the top of the search results.

Keywords shouldn’t be limited to one per post, either. While the premium versions of some plugins do let you specify more than one focus keyword, most of the SEO plugins used today do not. Authors need to be able to focus on more than one keyword per page and know what the optimization targets are for each. So we created our plugin with this ability built in.

Once you’ve selected your keywords, how do they appear through your content? It’s valuable to distribute keywords throughout the content. If you’ve mentioned them only near the top, or clustered them in just one paragraph, a search engine bot might not consider your page as relevant as another page that uses the phrase throughout.

Color coding shows you where your keywords appear, using a different color to highlight each focus keyword. So at a glance you can check your keyword distribution before you publish to make sure you’ve used them consistently, not too much and not too little, throughout your post.

Sitewide Insights

SEO includes improving a site’s “Expertise, Authority and Trustworthiness.” One way you grow your expertise on a subject is by developing a lot of content around it. Search engines evaluate a site’s depth of content on a theme to help determine its expertise.

Until now, SEO plugins haven’t shown you an analysis of your content depth site-wide within the WordPress environment. But that’s exactly where you need to plan and create!

So the plugin tells you how many times you’ve written about a topic in the past. And, by integrating data from Google Search Console, you can see exactly how many times you’ve focused on a keyword and how those posts are performing — without leaving WordPress.

Duplicate content is another headache for SEO-savvy publishers. To avoid inadvertently duplicating page elements, the plugin checks and alerts you when there is a possibility of duplicate content.

For example, you’ll know if the title tag, meta description or the content on a new page appears on multiple pages of the site. Where you previously had to go to an external tool to check and fix duplication issues, you’ll now see them reported at the point of publishing.

One more important sitewide analysis you can now get from the comfort of WordPress is access to all-important mobile performance stats. Rather than having to check various external tools, you can confirm the “mobile-friendly” score of your pages and see details about issues with mobile usability that could impede the site’s SEO and user experience. This is increasingly important with Google’s promised mobile-first index rolling out in the coming months.

Author Metrics

Which pages are your top performers and who are your top authors? These can change daily or weekly if you’re running a busy enterprise blog. But the standouts are incredibly helpful to know — especially if you plan on creating a reward system to encourage authors to hit certain goals for page views, engagements, or posts published.

When authors and publishers can access data that shows top-performing posts by author, a system of gamification and incentive can be fostered.

What you’ll get from the Bruce Clay SEO plugin for WordPress is access to data on the top performing posts or pages by contributor to the website as measured by actual visitors over a selectable period of time. It’s a scoreboard right in your WordPress environment.

Access to the SEOToolSet Engine Powering the Plugin

Enriching your publishing work space with both performance insights and optimization targets customized based on real-time search results is what makes the new plugin from Bruce Clay unique. SERPed Site Management and Site Explorer Review

SERPED Site Management and Site Explorer Review cover

Among SEO Hacker’s ever-growing toolbox, there are numerous tools in there that specialize in one specific function. Some tools specialize in keyword research, some in content assistance, others in tracking a site’s performance, and much more. However, we found out about SERPed and its capability of being an all-in-one SEO tools suite, and we just had to try it.

Tools like SERPed can greatly help your SEO campaign as they make things more organized, accessible, and efficient. Here’s what I think about it.

SERPed

Serped Login screen

Before logging into your account, the home page shows how much you and your company will be able to save by using SERPed. The tool advertises itself to be the do-it-all SEO tool that you would be able to rely on, which means that you would no longer have to download other SEO Tools. For $79 a month, it looks like a great deal

Serped DashboardUpon logging in, you would instantly go to your current project. From here, you can access the different sites and tools that SERPed has to offer. Let us navigate each part.

Sites and Tools

Serped Sites

The sites section allows you to navigate through the different domains that you are currently working on. You also have the option of adding a new site or even create a new project altogether.

Serped Tools

The tools section is where SERPed gets its money’s worth. You have all the things that you would need for your SEO and link building campaign, all in one convenient location. Here is a brief rundown of all the tools that SERPed has to offer:

  • Keyword Research – This tool allows you to be able to look for the right keywords for your SEO campaign, as you would be able to see how they rank up, and how competitive the keyword is.
  • Domain Research – This allows you to explore different domains on the internet, and gives you important statistics and data, like domain age, backlink data, and social metrics.
  • Domain Finding – This tool is the best way to look for the domains you would like to analyze and monitor. You can also look for available domains and see their prices, and expiring domains that would be available for purchase.
  • Site Manager – The site manager is where you would be accessing your projects, which would help you see how the domains are doing. You can also use the web analytics tool to see how they rank in search engines and use goal tracking to see if a domain is reaching certain milestones.
  • Rank Tracking – An effective SEO campaign needs results to back things up, and rank tracking allows you to see how well your keywords are doing locally and internationally. You can also see how well you are doing on sites like YouTube and Amazon as well.
  • Client Acquisition – If you are looking for prospective clients for your SEO and link building campaign, this tool would be able to help you contact them. You can explore and contact clients across different countries, and help them with their SEO campaign.
  • Other Tools – Along with all of the tools that have been mentioned, SERPed also has other reliable tools, that can help you, especially with content and blog management. The content curator and restorer allows you to manage and explore different articles in a blog, while WordPress Manager allows you to access all of your blogs in an instant. Lastly, there is also a grammar checker app, which comes in handy if you are writing and editing your content.

Next, let us focus on the Site Management and Domain Explorer Tools, which can be considered as one of the best parts of this do-it-all tool.

Site Management

SERPed Sites ManagementUpon entering the Site Management page, you can instantly see all of the projects that you currently have, along with some information like IP address, Domain and Page Authority, Moz Rank, Backlinks, and Social Metrics. You can also sort each of your projects by alphabet, or by their metrics and SEO rankings.

SERPed Projects PageIf you click one of the projects, you would be able to see even more data and other important pieces of information. These include keywords and rankings, and you can access different tabs.

SERPed Sites Statistics

On the Site Statistics tab, you get a very comprehensive list of data, which include keyword search volume, Moz and Majestic data, and keyword count and density.

Serped Backlinks Profile

The Backlinks Profile tab shows you charts which show you the SERPed Rank Breakdown, Domain Age Breakdown, and the Alexa Rank Breakdown. You can also view your anchor text cloud as well, and see the sites that are linking your domain.

SERPed Competitor

The Your Competitors tab shows you how you are stacking up with the similar companies in your field. This would help you track the progress of your competitors while helping you assess your own progress.

Serped SEO Review

The SEO Review tab is basically a detailed, yet concise report of your project. This would help assess the steps you need to take your SEO campaign further, as you are able to look for those specific details that would help you improve.

Site Explorer

One of the updated, more recently updated tools of SERPed is the Site Explorer, which has become more streamlined to make it more user-friendly.

Serped Site Explorer

Once you enter a domain, you get an overview of the domain, along with other relevant statistics. The sidebar on the left helps you access these data without the need of having to scroll down the whole page. Along with this, Spam Analysis has also been added, which helps eliminate unnecessary links and help evaluate potential links.

Serped Spam Analysis

As you can see, SERPed gives each domain a spam score, which shows how at risk your domain is from “spammy” links.

Serped Link Velocity

Another important part of the Site Explorer is the Link Velocity. This shows you how many links you have for each month which helps you with your link building strategy. The Site Explorer is your quick access tool which would help you get a quick look at how your SEO campaign is doing.

Verdict

With all of the tools available in a single place, SERPed is definitely that one place for all of your SEO and link building needs. While some tools only have a specific number of functions, and can only gather a limited amount of data, SERPed allows you to access many kinds of data, which helps you analyze and assess all the numbers that you need to know. If you are looking for an affordable and multi-faceted SEO tool, you can’t go wrong with SERPed.

Key Takeaway

Versatility is the key in today’s technology, which is why tools like SERPed is a welcomed addition to the list of effective SEO software. Its features allow you to not only access data, but also assist you with tasks such as site analysis, and content management. With all of the SEO tools out there, I can say that SERPed is simply one of the best.

I Get a Lot of Things Wrong

It’s become something of a strategy for me to jump into something, try to do it, fail, and then learn a little bit in the process. I learn more by failing than by studying something to death. But that’s not all.

I Get a Lot of Things Wrong

I get people wrong. I forget that not everyone should be taken at face value. For me, I just don’t know how to be a lot of different versions of myself. I’m me. No matter if you see me on a stage in front of thousands or say hi to me while I’m peeing in the men’s room, I’m the same guy. (Though I’m not going to shake your hand in the men’s room.) I take everyone at face value anyway, and then am willing to be wrong about them.
